The honest advice about Imsouane is this: plan a day trip, and you’ll probably stay longer. The Cathedral wave, the fishing harbour, the grilled sardines on the water’s edge — it adds up to a place that earns more than a single day. But if a day trip is what your schedule allows, here’s how to do it well.

The Route

Imsouane is 45 kilometres north of Taghazout on the N1 coast road. The drive takes 45–60 minutes depending on traffic. The approach involves turning off the highway onto a descending road that winds down to the village — spectacular views as you come in.

Transport Options

Hire car (recommended): The most flexible option. You can arrive early for the first surf session, stay for sunset, and leave when you want. Parking in Imsouane is easy. [BOOK HIRE CAR — Rentalcars.com affiliate]

Grand taxi: Take a grand taxi from Taghazout to Agadir (30 min, ~20 MAD per person), then a shared grand taxi heading north towards Imsouane from Agadir’s main grand taxi rank. Agadir–Imsouane: 35–55 MAD per person shared. Can take 1.5–2 hours total with waiting time.

Organised day trip: Some surf camps in Taghazout offer minibus day trips to Imsouane. Souk to Surf also serves the Taghazout–Imsouane route as part of their coastal network (from ~€10+).

What to Do on a Day Trip

Surf The Cathedral (if it’s on): Check the forecast the night before using Magicseaweed or Windguru. The Cathedral needs a decent swell (4ft+) to connect properly — showing up on a flat day means a beautiful location but no great waves. If the forecast is good, aim to be in the water by 9–10am before the wind builds.

Surf The Bay (any conditions): If the swell is small or The Cathedral isn’t working, The Bay on the south side of the headland is usually surfable for beginner to intermediate surfers. More sheltered, consistent small waves.

Walk the headland: The views from the headland between the two bays — looking north over The Cathedral and south over The Bay — are spectacular. Worth 30 minutes with a camera.

Eat grilled fish at the harbour: The harbour-side grills are the best lunch in Imsouane. Fresh sardines, bream, or whatever came in that morning, grilled over coals, served with bread and chermoula. 30–50 MAD. Sit outside with a sea view. This is one of the best cheap meals on the entire coast.

Explore the village: Small enough to walk in 20 minutes — the harbour, the fish market, the main street. Gets quieter away from the surf zone.

Day Trip vs Overnight Stay

The case for staying is strong: an early morning The Cathedral session before the crowds arrive, dinner at the harbour, and a second surf day. Two nights in Imsouane during a good swell is one of the better experiences available from a Taghazout base.

The case for a day trip: if you’re short on time or Imsouane isn’t firing (no swell), a day covers everything worth seeing comfortably.

Practical Info

  • Leave Taghazout: 8am to be in Imsouane for a 9–10am session
  • Return to Taghazout: Leave Imsouane by 4–5pm to avoid driving the coast road at night
  • Cash: Bring cash — limited card facilities in the village
  • What to bring: Surfboard (or rent in Taghazout before leaving), wetsuit, sunscreen, towel, water, cash for food

FAQ

Is Imsouane worth a day trip even if the surf isn’t great?

Yes — the setting, the seafood, and the village atmosphere justify the journey even on a flat day. The Cathedral without surf is still one of the most beautiful spots on this coast.

Can I rent a surfboard in Imsouane?

Yes — basic board rental is available in Imsouane. Several surf camps and guesthouses (including Big Blue Guest House) have equipment for guests. Selection is more limited than Taghazout. If you have a preferred board shape or size, bring your own.

How do I get back to Taghazout without a car?

Grand taxi back to Agadir, then another to Taghazout. Shared taxis stop running later in the afternoon — aim to leave Imsouane by 4pm if relying on public transport.
