Every surf zone has one — the wave that’s rarely perfect but unforgettable when it is. In Taghazout that wave is Mysteries. It doesn’t show up on every swell. It demands a specific combination of size, direction, and wind that doesn’t arrive more than a handful of times in a season. But when it does, it’s the best wave on this stretch of coast that most visitors never surf.

The Wave

Mysteries is a right-hander located between Hash Point and Killers, breaking over a reef shelf that only lights up under particular swell conditions. When it’s on, it produces long, fast, well-shaped walls — the kind of ride that makes you look around to see if anyone else is watching.

What makes it fickle is its sensitivity to swell direction and size. Too small and it doesn’t connect. Too big and it sections off. Too far south on the swell direction and it doesn’t work at all. But aim for a medium-large NW swell on the right tide with light offshore conditions, and it’s exceptional.

Best Conditions

Swell: NNW to NW, 4–6ft. This is a wave that needs a good push to connect its sections.

Wind: Light offshore (easterly). More sensitive to wind than some of the other breaks — even a slight side-onshore chop kills the shape.

Tide: Best around high tide — one of the few spots in the area that works on higher tides.

Best months: November to February, when larger, cleaner NW swells are most frequent.

Skill Level

Intermediate to advanced. Less punishing than Killers in terms of consequence, but the fast sections and reef require comfort in overhead surf.

Getting There

Mysteries is accessible from the coast path running north from Taghazout village. It’s between Hash Point and Killers — roughly a 10–15 minute walk north. Watch from the cliff path to see if it’s working before making the scramble down to the water.

Practical Info

  • Hazards: Reef, fickle sections, potential for unexpected closes. Check conditions from above before paddling out.
  • Crowds: Often uncrowded because it doesn’t work consistently. When it does fire, word travels fast — arrive early.
  • No facilities on site.

FAQ

How do I know when Mysteries is working?

Watch from the coastal path above. If you can see defined, peeling right-hand walls connecting along the reef, it’s on. Primary forecast tools used locally: Surfline (dedicated Mysteries forecast, 16-day outlook) and Surf-Forecast.com (Mystery Point, live wind/buoy data). Conditions: NW swell + NE offshore wind + high tide (one of the few spots in the area that works on higher tides).

Is it worth walking past Hash Point to look for Mysteries?

Yes — if Hash Point is 4ft+ and working well, walk north and check both Killers and Mysteries before committing. On some days Mysteries is significantly better with far fewer people.
