Day Trip to Essaouira from Taghazout
Essaouira is the one day trip from Taghazout that genuinely changes the texture of a visit to this coast. After a week of Hash Point and rooftop mint teas, the drive north to this UNESCO medina — past argan forests, cliff roads, and a sequence of dramatic coastal headlands — arrives at something fundamentally different. It’s the longest day trip in this guide. It’s worth every kilometre.
The Route
Essaouira is approximately 170km north of Taghazout on the N1 coast road. The drive takes 2.5 to 3 hours without stops. The road is good standard for most of the journey — tarmac, mostly two lanes, with some slower sections through coastal towns. The scenery is excellent throughout, particularly the stretch of argan forest between Agadir and Essaouira.
Leave Taghazout by 7:30–8am to arrive at Essaouira by late morning, which gives you 4–5 hours in the city before the drive back.
Transport Options
Hire car (strongly recommended for a day trip): The only way to do Essaouira as a flexible, comfortable day trip. You leave when you want, stop at viewpoints on the coast road, and arrive with enough time to actually explore. [BOOK HIRE CAR — Rentalcars.com affiliate]
CTM/Supratours bus: No confirmed direct Agadir–Essaouira CTM/Supratours service. The practical independent option is the Souk to Surf direct shuttle Taghazout–Essaouira for €18 (~3.5 hours) — the easiest non-car option. Via Marrakech is a 2-day journey and not suitable for a day trip.
Organised minibus day trip: Several operators in Taghazout and Agadir run Essaouira day trips. You get picked up, driven there, and have 5–6 hours before the drive back. Less flexible than a hire car but no driving required. Current pricing: 300–500 MAD per person (~€28–47).
What to Do in Essaouira
Morning: Walk the ramparts and harbour. Arrive at the port early to see the fish auction and the boats coming in. The ramparts facing the ocean (Skala de la Ville) are the iconic image of Essaouira — cannons pointing out to sea, kites wheeling in the wind.
Late morning: The medina souks. Essaouira’s shopping scene is calmer and more focused on quality craft than Marrakech. Thuya wood inlay work is the local speciality — boxes, chess sets, decorative objects, all made from the aromatic thuya root. Prices are reasonable and the sellers less aggressive.
Lunch: The fish grill stalls outside the medina walls (Marché aux Poissons) are the right answer. Fresh catch, grilled to order, eaten at outdoor tables. This is the Essaouira meal. Budget 60–100 MAD. Sit-down restaurant alternatives in the medina exist for every price point.
Afternoon: Wander the blue and white streets of the medina at will — find the spice market, the music shops selling Gnawa instruments, the gallery spaces tucked into old merchant buildings. End at a rooftop cafe for tea before driving back.
If you have time: Walk south along the beach from the medina walls — one of the longest, most dramatic Atlantic beaches in Morocco.
What to Buy
- Thuya wood products — the Essaouira speciality, made from local aromatic wood. Buy from workshops attached to the artisan school for the best quality.
- Argan oil — though you’ll also find good argan oil in Aourir on the way back.
- Spices — the spice market in the souks is well-stocked and fairly priced.
- Gnawa music CDs or instruments — if you’re into the music, this is the place to buy.
Practical Info
- Parking: Park outside the medina walls — there’s a large paid car park adjacent. Don’t attempt to drive inside the walls.
- Wind: Essaouira is consistently windy — it’s what makes it a world-class kite destination. Bring a light layer.
- Best months: April–June and September–October for the most comfortable weather.
- Cash and ATMs: Good availability in and around the medina.
FAQ
How long does the drive from Taghazout to Essaouira take?
2.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. The road is in reasonable condition throughout.
Is Essaouira better as a day trip or an overnight stay?
Overnight (or two nights) is better for a relaxed experience — the medina in the evening, after day-trippers have left, is noticeably calmer and more atmospheric. But a day trip is absolutely worthwhile if time is limited.
Is Essaouira safe?
Very — it’s one of the most relaxed Moroccan medinas for solo travellers. The hassle level is significantly lower than Marrakech. Solo female travellers consistently report it as comfortable.
What is Gnawa music?
Gnawa is a Moroccan spiritual music tradition with roots in sub-Saharan Africa, characterised by low, hypnotic rhythms, call-and-response singing, and the distinctive three-string guembri bass instrument. Essaouira is its stronghold. The annual Gnawa World Music Festival (typically June) is one of Morocco’s major cultural events.
