Getting Around the Taghazout and Tamraght Area

Getting around Taghazout by grand taxi

The good news: this area is small enough that most of it is walkable, and for anything further afield, grand taxis are cheap, frequent, and go everywhere relevant. The bad news: there’s no integrated public transport network, and if you want flexibility for day trips, a hire car or scooter changes what’s possible significantly.

Walking

Taghazout village to Tamraght: ~20–25 minutes along the coast path or road. Easy and pleasant, with sea views. The coast path is more direct; the road adds a few minutes.

Taghazout village to Hash Point: 5 minutes. Walk north from the main street to the headland.

Taghazout village to Killers: ~20 minutes north along the coast path.

Taghazout village to Anchor Point: ~35–40 minutes north.

Tamraght to Aourir: ~20 minutes south along the coast road.

The Taghazout–Tamraght stretch is one of the most walked and cycled routes in the area — well-defined and safe.

Grand Taxis

Grand taxis are your main tool for travel beyond walking distance. They’re large estate cars (typically Mercedes or Peugeot) that run fixed routes between towns, filling up with up to 6 passengers. The system looks chaotic from the outside but follows clear logic once you understand it.

How to use: Stand at the roadside on the main N1 coast road and flag down a taxi heading in your direction. Tell the driver where you’re going. If he’s heading that way and has space, he’ll take you. Pay on arrival — agree the price before setting off if you’re not sharing.

Key routes and approximate fares (shared):

  • Taghazout ↔ Tamraght: ~10 MAD
  • Taghazout ↔ Aourir: ~15 MAD
  • Taghazout ↔ Agadir: ~20–25 MAD
  • Tamraght ↔ Agadir: ~20 MAD
  • Agadir ↔ Imsouane: ~35–55 MAD

Private hire: For the whole taxi (no waiting, direct journey), you pay for all seats. Useful for early morning surf trips, airport runs, or carrying boards.

With surfboards: Manageable for short-board bags. For longer boards, negotiate with the driver before getting in. Some drivers will tie boards to the roof; most prefer them in the boot in a bag.

Hire Car

A hire car transforms your time in this area. Day trips to Paradise Valley, Imsouane, Tamri, and Essaouira become straightforward rather than logistically complicated. Surf trips to lesser-known breaks are spontaneous rather than planned.

Hire from Agadir — either from the airport on arrival or from the city centre. All major international rental companies and several local operators have availability. [BOOK HIRE CAR — Rentalcars.com affiliate]

Note on parking in Taghazout: The village is narrow and congested. Park at the edge and walk in. Tamraght has more vehicle-friendly space.

Scooters and Motorbikes

Scooter hire is available in the area and is a practical way to explore the coast road independently. Multiple operators confirmed in Taghazout and Tamraght: basic moped from 100 MAD/day, standard 50–125cc from 150 MAD/day, electric scooter from 200 MAD/24h. Helmets typically included. Some operators offer free delivery for multi-day rentals. Available via WhatsApp and rents.ma.

Caution: Moroccan road traffic can be unpredictable. If you’re not comfortable on a scooter in busy traffic, a hire car is safer.

Bicycles

Bike hire confirmed available in Taghazout and Tamraght. Bike Taghazout (locally owned, mountain and road bikes), Berbere Bike & Hike (€15/day regular bikes, €30/day electric bikes), Paradise E-Bike (e-bikes, based in Aourir/Tamraght, book via WhatsApp). Good for the flat coast road between Tamraght, Taghazout, and Aourir. Less practical for the hillier routes north towards Anchor Point.

Buses

Local buses (orange and green) run the N1 coast road and serve Taghazout, Tamraght, and Aourir regularly, connecting to Agadir. Cheap (a few MAD) but slow, irregular, and crowded. More practical as a backup than a primary transport method.

The Souk to Surf shuttle is a better-organised bus option between Agadir and the surf villages.

FAQ

Is a hire car necessary in Taghazout?

Not necessary — the village and the main surf breaks are walkable or grand-taxi-able. But a hire car significantly expands what you can do, particularly for day trips.

How much do grand taxis cost?

Very cheap — typically 10–30 MAD for journeys between the main villages and Agadir. Private hire of the whole taxi costs 5–6x the per-seat price.

Can I get around at night?

Grand taxis run until around 9–10pm on the main routes. After that, private hire is the main option. The villages themselves are walkable at night — very safe.
