The Sahara is a long drive from Taghazout, but if you want dunes, camel rides, and the feeling of a genuine desert landscape without the 10-hour journey to Merzouga, Timlalin is close enough to do as a half-day trip. The sand dunes on the edge of the Souss Plain inland from Agadir are smaller than Erg Chebbi, but the experience — sandboard in hand, fine golden sand, heat and silence — is a legitimate taste of Moroccan desert adventure.

What Is Timlalin?

Timlalin is a small village on the edge of a significant dune system in the Souss-Massa region, inland from Agadir. The dunes here are proper — tall enough for sandboarding runs, extensive enough to feel genuinely remote once you’re among them. It’s been developed as an accessible excursion for visitors based in Agadir and Taghazout, with local guides and basic equipment available on arrival.

Timlalin is located approximately 50km north of Agadir on the Atlantic coast, near Imsouane — not an inland desert location. The dune system here sits in the coastal Souss-Massa region. Journey time from Taghazout: approximately 60–75 minutes by hire car via the N1 coast road north.

Sandboarding

Sandboarding here is essentially snowboarding without the cold — strap onto a board (typically a basic modified snowboard) and descend the dune face. The runs are short by ski resort standards but the novelty is high, the wipeouts are soft (sand being more forgiving than snow), and a competent snowboarder can get the hang of it within a run or two. Complete beginners take a bit longer — expect a lot of falling and a lot of sand in places you’d rather not have sand.

Equipment is provided by local guides on site. For organised day trips from Taghazout (including transport, guide and equipment), pricing is typically in the 300–500 MAD per person range.

Camel Riding

Most day trips to Timlalin combine sandboarding with a camel ride through the dunes. The camels here are working animals, not tourist props — they’re accustomed to the terrain and the guides handle them well. A 30–45 minute camel trek across the dunes at sunset is genuinely atmospheric. Camel rides are available on site through local guides; typically included in organised day trip packages.

Getting to Timlalin

Organised day trip: The easiest approach. Several operators in Taghazout and Agadir run combined sandboarding + camel ride excursions, including transport, for approximately 300–500 MAD per person.

Hire car: Take the N1 north from Taghazout towards Imsouane. Timlalin is approximately 60–75 minutes from Taghazout. Follow signs towards Imsouane and ask locally at the Timlalin turnoff — the dune area is signposted from the coast road.

Practical Info

  • What to wear: Light, loose clothing. Sand gets everywhere — closed shoes (not sandals) and something to keep sand out of eyes on a windy day. Sunscreen and sunglasses essential.
  • Best time of day: Late afternoon for the softest light and cooler temperatures. Sunrise is also spectacular in the dunes.
  • Best time of year: October to April is most comfortable temperature-wise. July–August can be very hot inland.

FAQ

How far are the Timlalin dunes from Taghazout?

Approximately 50km north of Agadir on the Atlantic coast — around 60–75 minutes by hire car from Taghazout. Most organised day trips allow about 2–3 hours on site.

Is sandboarding suitable for kids?

Yes — children generally love it. The falls are soft and the runs can be calibrated by choosing smaller dune faces.

Do I need to book in advance?

For organised group trips, booking a day or two ahead is advisable in peak season. Outside peak season, local guides at the site can be hired on arrival.
