FIFA Inspects Agadir as Morocco Ramps Up World Cup 2030 Prep

Morocco’s Royal Football Federation (FRMF) convened a significant meeting this month to formalise the country’s next steps in preparing to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal. FRMF President Fouzi Lekjaa described the tournament as a strategic national project, and the July meeting produced key decisions around infrastructure delivery timelines, particularly for venues where renovation work is still in progress.

Agadir is one of six Moroccan cities hosting matches, and its Grand Stadium — with a capacity of around 46,000 — is currently undergoing upgrades to reach FIFA standards. A FIFA inspection delegation visited Morocco earlier this year to evaluate all candidate venues, covering areas including pitch quality, media facilities, VIP access, transport links, and nearby accommodation capacity. The results of that inspection are expected to inform a final stadium confirmation, with an official announcement from FIFA projected for later in 2026.

For travellers planning a stay in Taghazout or Tamraght, the World Cup push has a visible effect on the wider Agadir area. Road improvements, hotel capacity expansion, and airport infrastructure work are all under way, and most of this investment is happening in Agadir proper — around 20 kilometres from Taghazout village.

On a practical level, construction traffic in and around Agadir has increased, and ongoing roadworks occasionally affect journey times from Agadir Al Massira Airport into the Taghazout Bay area. If you are arriving in the afternoon, budget a little extra time.

The upside is real: upgraded transport links and a cleaner approach road into Taghazout Bay are among the planned outputs of the 2030 programme. Agadir’s city beach area has also seen landscaping improvements as part of the broader beautification push.
