AdventureKeys, one of the first dedicated surf camp operators to set up at Taghazout, is marking its 18th year of operating in the village - a milestone that quietly charts how this small Moroccan fishing community transformed into one of the Atlantic coast’s most recognised surf destinations.

From Fishing Village to Surf Capital

When AdventureKeys opened its first camp in 2008, Taghazout was largely unknown outside a tight circle of European longboarders who had been coming since the 1970s for breaks like Anchor Point, Hash Point, and Panoramas. The camp model - combining surf lessons, guided sessions, accommodation, and often yoga - helped introduce structured surf tourism to Morocco and attracted a broader audience who might not have found Taghazout independently.

Eighteen years later, the village has a functioning surf school industry, dozens of accommodation options, and enough restaurants to sustain a full week’s stay. Large hotel brands have arrived on the bay, and Morocco’s government now lists Taghazout Bay as a priority tourism development zone. AdventureKeys credits much of this growth to the surf camp community that established the destination’s identity before the infrastructure caught up.

The September Surf Season

The anniversary comes at the start of Taghazout’s autumn season, widely considered the best time of year for intermediate and advanced surfers. September and October bring consistent Atlantic groundswells - more structured and powerful than the choppy summer chop - alongside warm water temperatures and evenings cool enough to be comfortable after a day in the sun.

Beginners are better served by the flatter June and July conditions, but September remains the peak booking period for experienced surfers and those combining surfing with yoga retreats or multi-activity trips.
