Best Sunset Spots in Taghazout and Tamraght
Morocco’s Atlantic coast faces west. That single geographical fact means that every clear evening from October to April, the sky over the ocean turns a sequence of colours — orange to red to purple — that stops conversations mid-sentence. Taghazout and Tamraght are positioned to catch all of it.
Here’s where to be when the light goes.
1. The Rooftop Cafes at Hash Point
The Hash Point rooftop cafes are Taghazout’s front-row seats for sunset. You’re elevated above the break, facing directly west, with the water below reflecting the changing light. The fact that there might be a last session still running in the lineup, with surfers silhouetted against the orange water, makes it one of the better views we’ve seen regularly anywhere.
The cafes are busy on good sunset evenings — get there 30 minutes before sunset to claim a good position. Order mint tea, pay 15 MAD, and watch one of the more reliably spectacular shows available in Morocco.
Two standouts: Surf Berbere’s cafe/rooftop is repeatedly named as the perfect spot for a sunset coffee in Taghazout, overlooking Hash Point. They also offer drop-in yoga at 6:30pm before sunset. DFrost Almugar — described across multiple review sites as the best sunset spot in Taghazout, with beanbags, terrace sofas, a rooftop Jacuzzi, and a bar. Currently one of the hottest après-surf spots in the village. Aftas is another option — a panoramic terrace with views of the northern village, more relaxed and less well-known than DFrost.
2. Anchor Point Headland
Walking to Anchor Point and watching the sunset from the headland looking south back towards Taghazout is a different experience to the rooftop cafes — more exposed, more raw, the village visible in the distance with the swell lines rolling in. There’s nobody selling you mint tea up here. Just the headland and the Atlantic.
Allow 35–40 minutes to walk north from Taghazout village. Arrive 45 minutes before sunset and sit on the rocks.
3. The Coastal Path Between Taghazout and Tamraght
The walk between the two villages, particularly the elevated sections of the coast path with direct western exposure, catches the sunset broadside. If you’re walking back from Taghazout to Tamraght (or vice versa) in the evening, time it to arrive at the most exposed section of the path around sunset. The combination of the Atlantic light, the argan hills behind, and the empty coastline to the south is hard to beat.
4. Tamraght Seafront
The seafront road in Tamraght has a direct west-facing view across the Atlantic without the crowds of the Taghazout rooftops. Quieter, more local, and the sight of the sun dropping over Boilers and the ocean beyond is properly cinematic on a clear evening.
5. Any Beach at Low Tide
Low tide at sunset on this coast gives you a wide, reflective strip of wet sand that mirrors the sky. The beaches between Tamraght and Aourir — less developed, less trafficked — are particularly good. Walk south from Tamraght along the beach for 15–20 minutes and you’ll find stretches of coast with almost nobody on them.
When Sunsets Are Best
October–March: The most dramatic and consistent sunsets. Clear Atlantic air, no summer haze, and the low-angle winter light is the most photogenic.
After rain or wind: The sky clears in a specific way after weather moves through — the colours are more intense and the horizon sharper. If there was wind or rain in the morning, the evening sunset can be exceptional.
Summer (June–August): More haze, less dramatic colour range. The sunsets are still pleasant but don’t usually produce the vivid colours of the winter months.
Practical Notes
- Golden hour starts approximately 45–60 minutes before sunset — the light is already excellent before the sun hits the horizon
- Check the time: Sunset in winter (November–January) is around 6:00–6:30pm. Summer sunsets are 7:30–8:30pm. Plan accordingly.
- Clouds: A completely clear sky actually produces less dramatic sunsets than a sky with some cloud cover to catch the colour. The best evenings have broken cloud on the western horizon.
