Banana Point: The Underrated Break Near Aourir
Banana Point doesn’t get the attention of Hash Point or Anchor Point. It’s further from the surf camp ecosystem, it’s not on every “best of Morocco surf” list, and the access isn’t immediately obvious if you don’t know where you’re going. That combination of factors means it’s often significantly emptier than the Taghazout breaks — which is precisely why it’s worth knowing about.
The Wave
Banana Point is a right-hand point or reef break located near Aourir (also known as Banana Village), the small town on the coast road between Agadir and Taghazout. It works on similar swell conditions to the Taghazout breaks but often picks up slightly less swell due to its more sheltered position.
On a good day it produces well-shaped, rideable right-handers of decent length. It’s not going to challenge Anchor Point for raw quality, but it’s a perfectly enjoyable wave — especially when every surfer in the area is packed into Hash Point and you’d rather have room to breathe.
Best Conditions
Swell: NW to WNW, 3–5ft. Benefits from a slightly more westerly swell than pure north, due to its position relative to the headlands.
Wind: Offshore (easterly). Like all the breaks on this coast, morning tends to be cleaner before afternoon sea breezes develop.
Tide: Mid tide is generally most consistent (confirmed).
Best months: October to March.
Skill Level
Beginner to intermediate — a mellow, forgiving wave on most days that’s particularly good for surfers stepping up from beginner conditions but not quite ready for Killers or Anchor Point.
Getting There
Banana Point is near Aourir village, approximately 5km south of Taghazout on the N1 coast road. From Taghazout, take a grand taxi south towards Agadir and ask for Aourir/Banana Village. The break is visible from the road. Parking is informal roadside. A short path leads down to the beach from the road.
Practical Info
- Crowds: Generally low — this is one of its main advantages over the Taghazout breaks.
- No surf rental on site — bring equipment from Taghazout or Tamraght.
- Combine with Aourir: The fruit and vegetable market in Aourir is worth a visit before or after a session — some of the cheapest and freshest produce on the coast.
FAQ
Is Banana Point worth the journey from Taghazout?
Yes, particularly if Hash Point is packed. The grand taxi ride is short and cheap (around 10 MAD per person), and you’ll likely have the wave largely to yourself.
Does Banana Point work in summer?
More consistently than Anchor Point or Hash Point, since it can pick up smaller westerly swells. Still largely flat June–August but worth checking.
