Anza: Agadir's Northern Shore
Anza is the northernmost part of greater Agadir — the point where the city effectively ends and the coastal landscape opens up towards Taghazout. It’s not a destination in the way that Taghazout or Imsouane are destinations, but it’s a useful reference point for travellers passing through, and it has surf worth knowing about for those based in Agadir.
What Anza Is Like
Anza is an urban-adjacent coastal neighbourhood — residential, working-class Moroccan, with fishing activity still present alongside the gradual encroachment of development from Agadir to the south. It lacks the charm of the fishing villages to the north, but it’s also more authentic than much of modern Agadir, which was almost entirely rebuilt after the 1960 earthquake.
From Anza, the coast north towards Taghazout begins to take on the rugged, rocky character that defines the surf zone.
Surf in Anza
There are surf-able waves in and around Anza, primarily beach breaks that catch similar swell to the Taghazout coast but are generally lower quality and more wind-affected due to the proximity to Agadir. No widely named individual breaks for Anza specifically — the beach breaks here are worth a session if you’re in the area but not worth a special trip from Taghazout.
For serious surf, Taghazout and its associated breaks are 15–20km further north and worth the short journey. Anza works as a surf option for those staying in Agadir who don’t want to travel to Taghazout.
Getting to Anza
From Agadir city centre: shared grand taxi ~10–15 MAD, ~15 minutes. From Taghazout: grand taxi heading south ~15 MAD, ~20 minutes. Anza is on the N1 between Agadir and Tamraght.
Anza as a Base
Most travellers focused on the Taghazout surf scene won’t choose to base themselves in Anza — Taghazout or Tamraght are better positioned and have better surf infrastructure. But for anyone extending a trip into Agadir, or using Agadir as a hub, Anza sits at the useful junction between city amenities and the surf coast.
FAQ
Should I stay in Anza or Taghazout?
For a surf trip, Taghazout or Tamraght. Anza doesn’t have the concentration of surf infrastructure or quality waves. For access to both Agadir city and the surf coast, Tamraght splits the difference more usefully.
