Taghazout in April: Surf, Weather and What to Expect

Hash Point on an April day, Taghazout Morocco

April marks Taghazout’s shift from surf season to warm-weather season. The winter point break frenzy eases, the days grow longer and warmer, and the village takes on a more relaxed character. For some visitors — particularly beginners, yoga enthusiasts, and people interested in exploration as much as surfing — April is one of the most enjoyable months to be here.

Surf in April

April sits in the transition zone between winter swell and summer flatness. The North Atlantic is still sending occasional groundswells south, but the frequency and size drop compared to January–March. Expect 1–2 quality swell events per week rather than three or four. Between swells, conditions are often clean and small.

Swell: Average 1–2.5m, NW direction, with the larger events concentrating in early April and tapering as the month progresses.

Anchor Point still fires on the right swell in early April — a 2.5m day in the first week is as good as anything in winter. Hash Point is consistent across the month and less crowded than peak season. Panoramas and Banana Point are at their best in April — manageable swell size, clean conditions, and surf school groups on the water daily. Imsouane is excellent throughout the month in smaller, cleaner conditions.

Water temperature: 19–20°C and rising. Many surfers wear a 3/2mm wetsuit; a 2mm shorty is fine on warmer afternoons by late April.

Weather in April

April is Taghazout’s spring month and genuinely lovely. Daytime temperatures average 18–24°C. Evenings are warm enough to sit outside without a jacket. Days are long (sunset around 7:30pm by end of April).

Rainfall is low — April sees less rain than January–March. The landscape is still green from winter rains in early April but begins to dry out by the end of the month.

What to pack: 3/2mm or 2mm wetsuit depending on your cold tolerance, light layers for evenings, sun protection.

Easter Crowds

Easter falls in late March or April and brings the biggest short-term crowd spike of the spring season. Taghazout sees an influx of European families and weekend travellers during Easter week, accommodation prices rise, and the village feels busy. If you’re flexible, aim to arrive the week after Easter when the crowd clears and conditions are often just as good.

Activities in April

April’s warm weather opens up the full range of excursions:

Paradise Valley: One of the best months for Paradise Valley — the pools are accessible, the weather is warm enough to swim comfortably, and summer crowds haven’t arrived. The drive inland is scenic.

Essaouira day trip: The 2.5-hour coastal drive is at its best in the clear spring weather. Essaouira is warming up but not yet crowded with summer tourists.

Hiking: The inland trails are pleasant in April temperatures — not too hot, not too wet. See the hiking guide.

Yoga retreats: Several yoga retreat programmes run through April — the warm evenings and manageable surf make it a popular retreat month.

Camel trekking and sandboarding: Both are best in spring and autumn when the heat is manageable.

Who April Suits

Best for: Beginner and intermediate surfers who want accessible conditions with good weather. Non-surfers who want warm days, excursions, and a quieter village. Yoga retreat visitors.

Less ideal for: Advanced surfers chasing heavy winter-quality waves every session — April requires more patience and flexibility around swell timing.

Planning Tips

If visiting in April, avoid Easter week unless you’ve booked months ahead. The week following Easter is often excellent — quieter, cheaper, and swell conditions are just as likely to be good. April is a good month to hire a car for the duration — Essaouira, Paradise Valley, and Imsouane are all worth day trips.
