Taghazout in October: Surf, Weather and What to Expect
If you only go to Taghazout once, go in October. That’s the consensus among people who’ve been multiple times across different months. The swell has fully returned from summer dormancy, the temperatures are warm but not oppressive, the water is comfortable, the crowds are manageable, and the village feels like itself again after the summer influx. October is when everything aligns.
Surf in October
October sits at the beginning of the main Atlantic swell window. North Atlantic weather systems have re-established the conveyor belt of swell, pushing consistent groundswells south to Morocco every week. The frequency and reliability of quality sessions is the best of any month outside of the January–March peak.
Swell: Average 1.5–2.5m, NW direction, with larger events possible — a 3m episode in October is not unusual. Swell events arrive with good regularity: two to three per week in a good October.
Anchor Point starts working consistently in October — sessions of 150m+ are achievable on 2m+ NW groundswell. This is the month when visiting surfers first see the iconic point break in action if they missed the winter season. Mysteries and Killers fire on the bigger days. Hash Point is consistent throughout, with good crowd management possible since the competition isn’t yet at February levels. Panoramas and Banana Point are excellent for beginner and intermediate surfers in the smaller swell windows.
Water temperature: 20°C — still warm from summer heat. A 2mm wetsuit or 3/2mm is comfortable. Some surfers use a rashguard in the warmest October sessions.
Wind: October mornings are frequently offshore — the Harmattan (dry easterly wind) provides ideal cleaning conditions on incoming swell. Early sessions are often the best of the day.
Weather in October
October is arguably the best weather month in Taghazout. Daytime temperatures average 19–24°C — warm enough for a t-shirt in the afternoon sun, mild enough that hiking and excursions are pleasant without the summer heat. Evenings are comfortable at 14–18°C. The landscape shows the first hints of green after summer dryness following any early rain.
Days are shorter than summer (sunset around 6:45pm by end of October) but still long enough for morning and afternoon sessions with time for other activities between.
What to pack: 2mm or 3/2mm wetsuit depending on your cold tolerance, light layers for evenings, sunscreen.
Crowds and Prices
October is one of the best months from a crowd perspective. Summer tourists have gone, the serious February–March surf crowd hasn’t arrived yet, and Taghazout returns to something like its natural state. Lineups are competitive but manageable — 10–20 surfers at Hash Point on a good day rather than 30–40.
Accommodation is significantly cheaper than December–March. Good surf camp packages are available; many operations offer October deals and the best rooms are bookable with relatively short notice.
Activities in October
October’s warm weather and manageable conditions make it the strongest all-round activity month:
Paradise Valley: One of the two best months for Paradise Valley (the other being April). The pools are still swimmable comfortably, the weather is ideal for the walk, and crowds are minimal compared to summer.
Hiking: The coastal footpaths and inland Anti-Atlas trails are in their prime condition in October. See the hiking guide.
Camel trekking: Far more enjoyable in October than in summer heat.
Essaouira: Worth a full day in October — the ancient walled city is cooler than summer, the wind is favourable for watching kite surfers, and the town is active without being overrun.
Yoga and wellness: October is a strong retreat month — several Taghazout operations run autumn programmes specifically targeting the October shoulder crowd.
Who October Suits
Best for: All surf levels — intermediate and advanced surfers get reliable point break conditions; beginners find clean, accessible waves with good instruction; non-surfers and yoga visitors get the best weather and least crowds of any time in the surf season.
Is there a catch? October is the worst-kept secret in Taghazout. It’s become more popular than it used to be as word has spread — expect it to be busier in future years than it is currently.
